A memorable photo of a former corps member, Umar Ibrahim Umar, has ignited a crowdfunding campaign on social media to support his point of sale (POS) business.
Friends and admirers have already raised N300,000 to help Umar set up the enterprise.
The campaign received significant attention including from a former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isah Ali Pantami, who hinted to render his support for the cause.
In 2018, Umar became a social media sensation after a picture of him at the Wailo NYSC Orientation Camp in Bauchi State went viral. The photo, taken during the passing out parade (POP) on August 16, 2018, captured Umar in an iconic pose that resembled a military drill instructor.
“I received numerous calls from friends a day after the parade, telling me that my picture was trending on social media,” Umar told WikkiTimes in an interview.
“The first post I saw said, ‘This corper’s alawee (monthly stipend) should be more than N19,800.’ The picture was everywhere.”
The image continued to circulate, appearing on influencers’ pages, NYSC social media platforms, and even as memes. “People perceived it differently. While some were awed, others used it to ridicule me,” Umar explained.

The Campaign
Fast forward to 2024, and Umar’s friends, noticing how influencers were monetizing the photo, suggested he start a crowdfunding campaign to establish a business. Initially a private school teacher, Umar decided to use the funds to start a POS business.
“The rumor that I was into the POS business began spreading on social media two years ago. When my friends proposed the idea of crowdfunding, I saw it as an opportunity to turn the joke into a reality,” he said.
The campaign quickly gained traction across various media platforms. As of this report, Umar confirmed receiving N300,000 in donations and support from personalities, including former Minister Pantami.
“Someone contacted me to collect a copy of my CV, and Professor Isa Ali Pantami also reached out to speak with me privately,” Umar shared.
Grateful for the support, Umar is now seeking a suitable location to start his POS business. “I extend my heartfelt appreciation to everyone who contributed,” he said. “I’m excited to embark on this new venture.”
This heartwarming story exemplifies how a single photograph can transform a life, rallying a community to support one of their own.
