Some corps members in Jigawa state have been settled on their outstanding allowances after a WikkiTimes report exposed how they were denied their entitlement through no fault of their own.
WikkiTimes reported that some National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) members in Auyo local government of the State became frustrated with the non-payment of their monthly allowances for January.
The corps members from 2024 Batch A streams 1 and 2 alleged that the local government inspection officer (LGI) Lawan Usman failed to upload their monthly biometric clearance for no fault of theirs and became victims.
NYSC officials earlier told WikkiTimes that they would work swiftly to resolve the matter.
One of the affected corps members, Aliyu Sabiu confirmed to WikkiTimes that immediately after the report the agency swung into action and that the outstanding payment including transport allowances had been paid.
According to him, the LGI had reached out to the group after reading WikkiTimes’ report informing them that the matter would be settled soonest.
Hamza added that almost all the affected ex-corps members have been cleared including those currently serving.
He said: “most of the ex corpers have attested to receiving their allowances on our WhatsApp group chat. I am glad that NYSC took swift action after seeing this publication.”
Similarly, Mubarak Ismail, an ex-corps member said: “I can’t express how thankful I am for this quick response on this. This is proof that Journalism is the voice of the masses. People may think it’s just a meager amount, but it is our money and our right. I am sure because of this publicity nobody’s allowance will have to suffer again in Jigawa at least.”
Sabiu added that he received the transportation allowance just yesterday
One of the serving corp members from Batch A stream 2 who did wish to be named also testified to receiving the allowance.
“I was glad when I received the money because I have been stranded for a while. I knew publicizing the issue will yield positive results,” he said.
Efforts to reach the LGI, Lawan Usman proved abortive as phone calls and a text message sent were not responded to as of the time of filing this report.
