In Ningi, Free Speech Isn’t Free; For, A Burra Man Bags Arrest After Facebook Post About Ex-lawmaker

Freedom of Speech isn’t free in Ningi, one of Bauchi’s local governments.

One Jameel Ahmad Burra, a resident of Burra district in Ningi Local Government of Bauchi State has been arrested after expressing comments on Facebook that would be later tagged as “defamatory.”

The Facebooker who took to his social media handle said one Hon Abdulmumini Mai Chemist a former lawmaker in the area had lower chances of being selected as commissioner representing Ningi by Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed.

Jameel had in the post said alleged that Hon Mai Chemist’s inability to be nominated as commissioner by Governor Bala Mohammed was because the former lawmaker “is an APC member.”

Jameel in the post argued that Hon Sani Muhammed Burra, an adviser to Governor Bala Mohammed on Legislative Matters and a PDP member has better chances of being nominated for commissioner’s slot by his principal than the said Hon Mai Chemist.

A source told WikkiTimes that Jameel was later arrested by police personnel attached to the Ningi Area Command at the request of the former lawmaker.

“The Police whisked him away from Burra to Ningi amidst heavy rain. “We urge the Police to act professionally and not to be a party to the desperation of disgruntled politicians”, our source said.

When contacted, Hon Abdulmumini denied having any a hand in the arrest but said he will not tolerate defamation of his character.

“What I will not tolerate is defamation of my character, I don’t malign people, but if one tries to malign my character, I cannot tolerate that”, he said.

The lawmaker added that; “Go and asked Jamilu to tell you about his write-up, read the write and analyse it yourself. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression, but the repercussion after the free speech is what anyone involve should answer for himself”, the ex-lawmaker insisted.
