A National Commissioner at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, has assumed office as the Acting Chairman of the Commission following the commencement of terminal leave by Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
The handover took place on Tuesday at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).
Yakubu, who has led the commission since November 2015, is proceeding on leave ahead of the expiration of his tenure.
In a brief ceremony, he handed over official responsibilities to Agbamuche-Mbu, who represents Delta State on the INEC board. She will oversee the affairs of the commission pending the appointment of a substantive chairman by President Bola Tinubu.
Yakubu, a two-term chairman, supervised two general elections — 2019 and 2023 — and multiple off-cycle polls during his tenure.
INEC sources said the transition is part of a smooth leadership succession plan within the electoral body.
