As Bauchi State Government boasts of restoring the glory of education in the state and its transformation in the sector, many public schools continue to remain in a dilapidated conditions that is not suitable for learning.
WkkiTimes reports some public primary and secondary schools in Misau local government of the state and found many pupils sitting on bare floor as their teachers impart knowledge to them in such condition.
Pupils and students in the primary and Junior Secondary Schools in visited were receiving lessons on bare floor despite Government’s repeated claims of providing basic infrastructure in schools.
Checks by WikkiTimes revealed that in Central Primary School (Sarki Ahmadu Alhaji) Misau, pupils learn while sitting on bare floor in one of the ancient primary schools in the town.
Located at the heart of Misau along Emir’s drive, the school hosts both primary and upper Basic Secondary School (JSS) but with no chairs for both the students and pupils.
“It is disheartening that the whole Central Primary School lacks chairs for students. It is a historical school that produced illustrious sons of the town”.
“Not only Central Primary School but Fawari also has no chairs for students. It is not our liking but we have nothing to do about”, complained one of the teachers in Misau who craved anonymity for fear possible victimisation for speaking to the press.
Abubakar Adamu, a father and Misau resident told WikkiTimes that his fear is about the new uniform he bought to his daughter getting spoiled due to lack of seat in Tudun Wada Primary School. He purchasing another uniform that can also quickly wear out on account of lack of suitable chairs is unfortunate especially in the current harsh economy.
“I don’t know how this little girl will manage to sit down on the bare floor without damaging her uniform. I have to forfeit many things to afford this. I don’t know what the government is doing if it can not even provide chairs to schools”.
“My daughter asked her mother to give her a praying mat so that she and her friends will sit. I thought she was joking until I saw this myself”, said Adamu.
Some of the teachers who agreed to speak off-record due to fear of victimization lamented the condition, saying that students and pupils are made to receive lessons under dehumanizing condition.
In another school, Tudun Wada Primary and Junior Schools, majority of classes in Fawari Primary and Junior Secondary School lack chairs, thus students are seen sitting on bare floors while lessons are ongoing in one the of biggest local government headquarters in Bauchi.
“This is happening in the local government headquarters, what of rural areas far from here. We the parents, are not helping matters. We have to ask the schools what they are doing”, opined Adamu.
It would be recalled that the Bauchi Government had while responding to claims by popular Hausa satirist Dan Bello that schools in the state are in shambles said they renovated and provided infrastructure in schools.
Muhammed Abdullahi, Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board(SUBEB) said contrary to Dan Bello’s claims, the state government has invested heavily in infrastructure development in schools across the state.
“The Bauchi State Government has invested heavily in infrastructure development, including the construction and renovation of schools, provision of educational materials, and teacher training programs. These efforts have improved the learning environment and enhanced the quality of education”, said Abdullahi.
