Dr Ayodele Joseph, medical director of Ayodele Specialist Hospital in Ilorin allegedly sedated and raped his patient during surgery. But he claimed that the victim has been his girlfriend for years.
The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Paul Odama, on Friday, while parading the suspect alongside 13 others on Friday, said that Dr Joseph had on May 5 had an “unlawful carnal knowledge” of a nurse who he had sedated for a surgical procedure, which the victim secretly filmed.
“On the 5th of May, one female victim (name withheld) a nurse reported that she went to Ayodele Hospital at No. 290, Sawmill Area, Lagos Road, Ilorin for surgery.

“The hospital’s chief medical director, one Dr Ayodele Joseph, during the procedure sedated the patient, which led her to become unconscious.
“Before the sedation, fearing any mishap, the patient activated her telephone and placed it in a vantage position to record the surgery unknown to the doctor.
“She woke up from sleep after the surgery to find herself fully naked and when viewing the recorded video, she discovered that Joseph had unlawful sexual intercourse with her while under sedation,” Odama said.
He said an investigation led to the recovery of the video, adding the clip also corroborated medical examinations conducted on the victim.
The police boss noted that Dr Joseph had recently been arraigned for related offences.
“This resulted in the death of one Nneka Akanike in his hospital, under a questionable circumstance, which led to his being charged to court,” and he would be charged to court again for rape after the conclusion of the investigation,” he added.
However, Dr Joseph denied the rape allegation, claiming that the nurse was his long-term girlfriend.
According to the suspect, he trained the nurse for eight years, sponsored her and have sexual intercourse with her several time as his girlfriend.
“She is my girlfriend and we have dated for eight years. I trained her as a nurse; I sponsored her to a school of nursing in Lagos and I employed her. How can I rape a lady that I have had intercourse with several times?”
He stressed that the nurse has set him up in an attempt to extract money from him, claiming she has already taken N500,000 from him in relation to the incident.
It is gathered that the state branch of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has been notified of the recent allegations against Dr Joseph, and the hospital has been cordoned off by security personnel.
