Jigawa Flood: Death Toll Hits 30, 9k Residents Displaced

The Executive Secretary of the Jigawa state Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr. Haruna Mairiga has said 30 people have died in flood related disasters in different parts of the state.

Dr Mairiga also revealed that over 9000 residents have been so far displaced by the disaster in the state.

He made the disclosure when he visited Jahun local government, of the worst hit areas, on an assessment tour.

According to him, about 5000 houses and over 7000 hectares of farmlands have been damaged in the flood.

He said “This year’s flooding in jigawa was very severe as it resulted in a significant loss ranging from loss of life and property, with 30 people confirmed dead and 9,366 displaced.”

According to Dr. Mairiga since the start of the ugly flooding his agency swung into actions “by evacuating the victims to provision of emergency relief camps for shelter, among other assistants such as provision of foods like thousands of bags of rice, maize, millet, and medication. However, challenges persist, with reports of diarrhea and fever among children at Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.”

He said the state government through the SEMA is supporting the IDPs to cope with the situation.

Azumi Garba Tsakuwawa, a victim who took shelter at a School in Jahun said, “We spent three days without adequate food until the government assisted us with food. Our children have been sick with fever and other diseases.”
