The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Jos has opposed the increment of school fees by the management of the institution.
The SUG expressed concern that the increment comes at a time when all Nigerians struggle to navigate the present economic hardship.
The students’ union, in a statement, jointly signed by Comrades Sambo Peter and Joshua Uguwmba, President and Speaker of the union said the recent increment came to them as surprise. They called on the management to revert the decision.
According to them, the union had sat with the Directorate of Student Affairs where it was confirmed to them that there is an increment in school fees in some areas to include examination fees, utility charges, student union dues among others.
“Today, at the request of the Students Union Government, a meeting was held with the Directorate of Students Affairs in order to ascertain the true state of things. However, we were rather met with a shock as the Directorate affirmed the increment of N10,000 for Returning Students and N35,000 for New Students”,said the SUG.
According to the Student Union, the institution’s management has raised examination fees from N7,500 to N10,000, Security charges from N5,000 to N6,000, Utility/Sundry charges from N20,000 to N25,000, while Students Union Government due and Tiship were hiked from N1000 to N2000 and N3000 from N2500 respectively.
The union leaders called on all students to halt registration pending on when the university’s management reverses its decision.
“While we maintained our position on NO INCREMENT, we have been assured that the repeated charges in the breakdown will be removed from the breakdown,” the statement said.
“In view of the above, Jossites are hereby enjoined to remain calm and not to proceed with the payment of the School Charges until all the necessary and relevant corrections are effected and the needful is done”, it added.
