Jos Violence: Residents Decry Burning Of Mosques, Shops At Building Materials Market

Residents in Jos, the Plateau State capital have bemoaned the recent burning of two mosques and 14 shops belonging to Muslim traders at Building Materials vegetable market by suspected armed militia.

The Jos Muslims’ community stated this in a statement under the auspices of Jasawa Community Development Association, JCDA on Tuesday.

The statement signed by its Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Ibrahim Mashallah, described the burning of Muslims’ mosques and shops as unfortunate.

He described it as worrisome seeing how it’s making frantic efforts to protect Churches within the Muslims-dominated areas while suspected Christian militias are busy setting up mosques and Muslim business premises ablaze in Jos South local government area of Plateau State.

“Two standing Mosques were demolished, property worth millions of Naira looted, and 14 shops all belonging to Muslim traders burnt down to ashes.

“We view these bad happenings as the handiwork of some bad elites mostly politicians, few unmannered religious and Community leaders, and criminal gangs among youths,” the statement read in part.

He noted that, however, since the wake-up of the recent massacre of over 30 innocent Muslim travelers along Rukuba Gada-Biyu Road and the killing of scores of people in Yelwan-Zangam, a suburb of Jos metropolis restive youths in Christian dominated areas have been killing people especially in villages where highways passed through silently.

Alhaji Masallah said that these incessant killings must be stopped, calling on both the Federal and the state governments to do the needful to ensure that silent Killings of innocent people on the Plateau are brought to an end.

He described as excommunicated and callous inciteful calumny campaigns by some politicians, traditional rulers and religious leaders staged against adherents of the other faith living on the Plateau.

“We are saddened as a matter of great concern, by the incivility of some utterances and statements from Communities and associations which are fanning the embers of hatred among citizens in the state. Most of these statements are unbecoming of good people in leadership.

“PIDAN’s stand has clearly shown that much-civilized approach to issues is still needed than the way they have advanced their crude thoughts,” he said.

The Chairman commended the efforts of Governor Simon Lalong to ensure a peaceful Plateau in the last six years of his stewardship as governor of the state.

He reiterated the commitment of the entire Jos Muslim communities to justice and fairness to all so as to pave way for a peaceful Plateau full of economic prosperity and social well-being for all.

“We are watching events with keen interest noting the peace-loving men and women in the state and highlighting those that mean well or otherwise to our dear state.”
