A group of Bauchi journalists has launched a coalition to enhance health reporting, focusing on addressing critical public health issues in the state.
The coalition is supported by Breakthrough Action Nigeria with funding from USAID, to improve the quality of solution-oriented journalism in the state, particularly during health emergencies.
Speaking at the launch, the Programme Officer for Social and Behavioural Change at Breakthrough Action Nigeria, Nura Fago, highlighted the importance of the initiative.
According to Fago, the initiative will empower journalists to produce impactful reports that can influence positive social behaviour, especially in times of public health crises.
“The coalition is designed to support journalists in crafting solution-driven reports that can change public perception and actions during health emergencies,” Fago said.
He emphasized that such reporting could save lives by fostering better understanding and response to health challenges.
Speaking, the Coordinator of the coalition, Ishaq Hardawa, expressed gratitude to Breakthrough Action Nigeria for the capacity-building support provided to the group.
He noted that the training has significantly enhanced the journalists’ ability to produce high-quality health stories. “It has translated into improving our production skills, and we are now more equipped to cover health issues effectively,” Hardawa said.
Hardawa further urged members of the coalition to remain dedicated, determined and committed to the cause, stressing that their efforts would be key to making a lasting impact on public health in the state, especially through sharing their acquired knowledge with colleagues.
