JUST IN: Bauchi Imam, Idris Abdul’aziz Released from Prison

The Chief Imam of Dutsen-Tanshi Mosque in Bauchi metropolis, Dr Idris Abdul’aziz has been released from the state’s Medium Security Correctional Center.

WikkiTimes had earlier reported that Dr Idris was detained after Fityanul Islam, a Dariqa group, petitioned the police over comments by the Imam alleging he relegated some renowned Dariqa scholars.

The group further alleged that the Imam uttered blasphemous comments against the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (Peace be upon Him.)

Acting on the petition, the police invited the accused cleric and later charged him to Bauchi Chief Magistrate Court Number 1 on one count charge bordering on inciting public disturbance of peace, which is a bailable offence.

The presiding Magistrate, Abdulfatah Shekoni, while ruling on the bail application filed by counsel to the Imam, Umar Hassan, had last week ruled that the Imam must present sureties comprising a serving Permanent Secretary working with Bauchi State Government, a district head from within the Bauchi metropolis and landed property worth N5,000,000  as a condition for his release.

At press time, WikkiTimes could not immediately confirm whether or not the Imam met the earlier stipulated bail conditions before he regained freedom or  the court varied the conditions.

Addressing a crowd of followers shortly after his release at his mosque, Dr Idris Abdul’aziz commended the support he received from all corners, leading to his eventual release from prison.
