The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), Gadau, has declared an indefinite strike action over unresolved issues with the State Government.
The Union noted that the issues border on the absence of pension and retirement schemes, deplorable working conditions and unpaid earned academic allowances.
ASUU SAZU Chairperson, Comrade Auwal Nuhu in a press conference shortly after a congress on Friday at the Yuli campus of the University, said “the strike was commenced immediately at 12:00pm on Friday 29th November 2024.”
Comrade Nuhu added that, “The Branch, at its congress meeting held on Friday, the 29 of November 2024 at the presence of the NEC Visitation Team reviewed and assessed the progress on its demands before the University.
“The Congress noted the lack of readiness and commitment of the University administration and the Government to attend to its demands
The Congress stressed that it has exhausted all mechanisms, and all attempts to get the authorities to attend to its demands were fruitless
“Consequently, the Congress passed a resolution for the Branch to embark on comprehensive and indefinite strike action until further notice.”
He described the situation as “unbearable” and accused the university management and Bauchi government of failing to address longstanding grievances despite repeated calls for intervention.
“We cannot continue to work under these conditions. Our members are demoralized and left without any form of financial security after decades of service. This strike is a last resort after exhaustive dialogue and appeals,” the ASUU chairperson stated.
Comrade Nuhu insists the strike will not end until tangible measures are taken to resolve their concerns.
Our correspondent reports that the indefinite strike is expected to disrupt academic activities and further strain the relationship between the university management and its staff. Students, already grappling with a tight academic calendar, are now left in uncertainty.
