A 40-year-old woman, Stella Godwin, was on Tuesday arraigned before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged N1.23 million fraud.
Godwin, who resides at Old Kamazo, Kaduna, is being charged with fraud, to which she pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between January and August in Sabon Tasha, Kaduna.
Leo said that Godwin, a staff of Grace Multi Dynamic Investment Limited, fraudulently converted the sum of N1.23 million belonging her employer to her personal use.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 241 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State.
She said the section of the law prescribed a five-year jail term for anyone found guilty.
Leo further urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the file and assemble witnesses.
Counsel to the defendant, Samson Timothy, urged the court to grant his client bail, promising that the defendant will not jump bail.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Emmanuel ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should present evidence of three years tax payment to Kaduna State Government.
He adjourned the case until Oct. 9, for hearing.
Phone Stealing
Meanwhile the Magistrates’ Court, also sentenced a man, Rabiu Yusuf, to 16 weeks imprisonment for stealing two iPhones worth N678,000.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, held that the convict failed to give the court a reasonable explanation why he committed the crime.
Emmanuel charged the convict to desist from any criminal act or face a more stringent punishment if found wanting in future.
The convict, who resides in Ali Akilu Road, Kaduna, was convicted of criminal conspiracy and theft and he pleaded guilty.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo informed the court that the defendant committed the offence with two other persons, at large, on Sept. 13 at Kurmin Marshi Kaduna.
Leo said that the defendant stole two iPhones all valued at N678,000 from the shop of the complainant, Zainab Salisu.
He said that the defendant and his accomplices came to the shop under the pretense of buying clothing materials and stole the two iPhones while they were kept being charged.
“It was later discovered through a CCTV camera that it was the defendant who stole the phones,” the prosecutor said.
He added that the phones were traced, and the defendant was arrested at his resident with the said stolen phones.
Leo said the offence contravened the provisions of Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017. (NAN)
