Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State says will meet President Bola Tunibu over the economic hardship being experienced by Nigerians.
The governor stated this on Monday during a meeting with the business community and other stakeholders held at the Government House, Kano.
”I will personally meet President Tinubu to intimate him about the hardship the people of Kano State are encountering due to inflation to provide succour to the people.”
He noted that inflation was on the high increase on foodstuff while other daily needs were very alarming, hence the urgent need to put heads together to find lasting solutions to the economic pangs.
“The purpose of this gathering is to fine-tune modalities on how to address the menace of high inflation because people are really suffering and we need to do something about this,” Yusuf said.
He said that the state government would do everything possible to provide an enabling environment to the business community.
Yusuf however urged the business community to also reciprocate through adequate payment of taxes, so that the government would generate revenue to perform optimally.
The governor expressed the desire to ensure that the state attained the position of the most attractive trade state.
This, he said, is clearly evident in the programmes and projects embarked upon by the state government in order to attract more investors from within and outside the country.
“Our administration as part of its dire need to change the outlook of markets and also to enable them to compete favourably with international markets came up with policies and programmes that would enhance socioeconomic activities in all parts of the state.
“The cumulative effects of this project will be economic growth manifested in employment opportunities, job creation, and income diversification thereby reducing poverty,” he further stated.
“We are begging you the business community to please shun hoarding of foodstuff in warehouses, bring it out and sell it to the public to curtail the high increase of foodstuff, especially at this moment that fasting of Ramadan is quite approaching.
“I will personally meet President Tinubu to intimate him about the hardship the people of Kano state are encountering due to inflation with a view to providing succour to the people,” News Agency of Nigeria quoted the governor saying.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Commerce, Alhaji Abbas Sani Abbas, said the meeting was very timely, geared towards providing a solution to the current hardship facing Kano residents.
WikkiTimes reports that residents of Minna, the capital of Niger state, have on Monday taken to the streets of the town to protest the surging cost of living in Nigeria.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had announced the removal of decades-long fuel subsidies during his inaugural presentation shortly after taking an oath of office.
The removal has, however, impacted profoundly on the prices of goods across markets, making it harder for locals to access daily meals and to other essential needs.
The presidency insisted that the removal was the last option for the ailing Nigeria’s economy.
