Kano: Police Renew Ban on Motorcycle Passenger Trips, Restrict Tricycle Operations

The Kano State Police Command says it has begun strict enforcement of the state government’s ban on carrying passengers on motorcycles and the restriction on commercial tricycles from operating between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily.

The measures, according to the police, remain fully in force across nine local government areas: Kano Municipal, Gwale, Dala, Fagge, Nassarawa, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo (Jido area), and Dawakin Kudu (Tambuwal, Gurjiya and Jido wards).

In a statement issued on Monday, the police spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the joint enforcement operation—carried out alongside other security agencies and the Kano Road and Traffic Agency (KAROTA)—has been empowered to arrest and prosecute violators.

Mr Kiyawa said enforcement teams would also profile individuals who defy the directive and counter the spread of misinformation capable of causing fear and confusion among residents.

He reminded motorcycle and tricycle operators that the restrictions were introduced to enhance public safety amid growing security concerns in the state.

“Any person found operating motorcycles or commercial tricycles in contravention of the ban or restriction will be promptly arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the statement quoted the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, as saying.

The commissioner urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and report suspicious activities or violations via the command’s emergency numbers: 08032419754, 08123821575, and 09029292926.

The police assured that necessary measures will be taken to ensure full compliance in the interest of public safety and order.
