Residents of Kwantangiri community of Funtua LGA in Katsina State have blocked major highways to express displeasure over continued bandits’ attacks on their community.
The locals who carried placards with inscriptions calling for an end to banditry in their community alleged that bandits operated unchallenged for hours in a recent attack on the community.
Muhammad Aminu Kabir, a Katsina-based public affairs commentator said the residents were angered by bandits’ attack in the community on Wednesday, where eight people were kidnapped, one person died in an over two hours of unchallenged bandits’ attack.
According to Kabir, the bandits had between 8pm to 10pm of Tuesday night attacked Kwantangiri community while no response was received from the security operatives to rescue the villagers.
Security forces, it was learned, arrived after the bandits had left.
A youth from the community, who preferred anonymity, expressed frustration over the delayed response by security agencies, adding that it was the vigilante group from Funtua who first arrived at the scene and documented the number of casualties.
“Angered by the attack and the lack of timely intervention, we decided to stage this protest. We hope the authorities will respond to our plea by increasing the security presence in our area to ensure lasting peace and safety,” he said.
When contacted by WikkiTimes, Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, Katsina State Police Command spokesman said security operatives have been deployed to the community and normalcy has been restored.
“Our personnel are in the community now, normalcy has been restored there”, replied Aliyu.
