Kwara Govt Shuts Down Abattoir over Meat Poisoning

The Kwara State Government has ordered for immediate closure of an abattoir at Mandate Market in Ilorin, the state capital over suspected meat poisoning in the facility.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Abubakar Ayinla who led government officials for on the spot visit to the market said the measure become necessary in order to safeguard the lives of the people following the incident.

According to him, the ministry has confiscated the suspected beef and fumigated the whole facility which will remain close for over three days.

He said this decision followed an earlier visit by commissioners of health, agriculture and rural development, officials from ministry of environment and Executive Secretary Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency.

 WikkiTimes recalled that earlier on Sunday morning, there was panic in the market over rumoured cases of meat poisoning in the abattoir which led to immediate confiscation of all suspected meats for laboratory tests by officials of state ministry of health and temporary stoppage of activities at the facility before the state government ordered for its immediate closure.
