The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has announced a reduction in the nomination fees for chairmanship and councillorship positions in the upcoming local government elections.
Professor Sani Lawan Malumfashi, Chairman of the state’s electoral body, disclosed that the new fees for nomination are set at ₦9 million for chairmanship candidates and ₦4 million for councillorship candidates.
This is a reduction from the previous ₦10 million and ₦5 million fees initially set by the commission.
The earlier fee structure has been severely criticised, with opposition parties taking legal action against KANSIEC. Last week, the court issued a restraining order preventing the commission from imposing the original fees.
Speaking at a press briefing at KANSIEC’s headquarters, Professor Malumfashi confirmed the commission’s compliance with the court ruling. “As a law-abiding institution, we have adjusted the fees accordingly. Candidates can now purchase the forms from the designated banks,” he said.
The revised fee also applies to running mates of chairmanship candidates, and Malumfashi urged candidates to act quickly in obtaining their forms.
The KANSIEC chairman also expressed satisfaction with the opposition parties’ decision to participate in the elections scheduled for October 26. He called for issue-based campaigns, urging political parties to avoid violence or personal attacks during the election process.
In addition, Malumfashi announced that primary elections will commence on Saturday, September 14, and he expects parties to submit their candidates’ lists promptly.
