Local NGOs making effort to bridge gender gap in Nigerian prisons

Local Non Governmental Organizations, Carmelite Prisoners Interest Organisation (CARPIO) and Prison Inmates Development Initiative (PIDI) are making efforts to end gender disparities in the Nigerian Prisons.

The Executive Director, CARPIO Rev. Ambrose Ekeroku during a courtesy visit to the comptroller, Nigerian Prison Service, Bauchi state command said efforts were on top gear by his organization to address the gender gaps affecting women inmates in Nigeria.

“the easiest and most cost effective way to address gender gaps in our prisons is through reforms of the justice system”. “Our Organization in collaboration with relevant stakeholders is making frantic efforts to ensure that these reforms we advocate for look into the peculiarities of women in the justice system” Rev. Ambrose has said.

Rev. Ambrose who said his organization which celebrated its 27th year anniversary recently was partnering with PIDI in Bauchi to expand its humanitarian assistance in the state.

Also speaking, the Executive Director, Prison Inmates Development Initiative, Mr. Mbami Sabka Iliya said the state of prisoners in Nigeria, particularly females needed urgent attention of relevant stakeholders. He said the legal system in the country was tilted to favour only men, citing access to justice as a major impediment for Female inmates.

Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Command of the Nigerian Prison Service in its reaction has charged relevant stakeholders to take legal action towards addressing inmates conjunction in the Prisons across the country.

The State Comptroller of the Service, Alhaji Sulaiman Suleiman gave the charge while reacting to the delegation of two NGOs that paid him a courtesy visit.

Comptroller Sulaiman Sulaiman said the call was necessary to enable NGOs assist innocent inmates whom were remanded without trail for years.
