The Ogun Command of the Nigerian Police Force has warned religious leaders against opening of worship centres in the state and in violation of the government’s lockdown directives.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Abimbola Oyeyemi (DSP), gave the warning in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Saturday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Friday announced postponement of the opening of all religious centres in the state, following increased cases of the CIVID-19.
Oyeyemi, in the statement, said that the police had received intelligence report that some religious leaders in the state were planning to open their places of worship in defiance to the state government’s directive.
He added that the police would consider such action as a deliberate attempt at causing the widespread of the virus in the state.
“As a responsible organisation which is constitutionally mandated to maintain peace and order, the police will not fold its hands while some people will openly flout the law of the land.
“In view of this, the command wishes to appeal to those who have such intention to have a rethink in their own interest.
“Therefore, all the area Commanders, DPOs as well as the Command’s tactical squads have been directed to be on surveillance patrol across the state with the view of bringing to justice anybody found disobeying the government’s directives.
“The fight against COVID- 19 should be seen as a collective responsibility of everybody and we should all join hands with government to defeat the virus once and for all,” he said. (NAN)
