Malaria: Bauchi Govt To Fumigate Capital City In 3 Days

Bauchi State Government in its effort to tame the spread of malaria within the metropolis has rolled out plans to fumigate the city against mosquitoes in three days.

The Director-General, Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency, BASEPA, Dr Ibrahim Kabir revealed this to reporters in Bauchi on Saturday.

Dr Kabir explained that the exercise was informed sometimes late last year when a citizen of the state intimated Governor Bala Abdulkadir on the state of mosquitoes, the Chief malaria vector, around the metropolis and the need for government to fumigate the environment to cut the chain of the spread of malaria in the state.

The Director-General further explained that the fumigation exercise which will be jointly executed by BASEPA and BACATMA, is designed to be completed within three days starting from Saturday evening.

“We are going out today. Already we have all our modalities to fumigate the entire Bauchi metropolis and we are going to other urban centres in Bauchi State in order to fumigate them.

“The exercise does not just stop at doing onetime fumigation, we have planned to sustain it,” he explained.

The Director-General said that fumigation will be carried out between 7 pm-9 pm daily on the 125 waterways in Bauchi metropolis.

Dr Kabir said his agency has trimmed the cost of the exercise from what used to be charged to around five million naira.

According to the Director-General, the agency has directed primary healthcare personnel in all the 20 local governments of the state to carry a similar exercise in their respective host communities.
