Man bags 8 months imprisonment for stealing bag

A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday, sentenced 24-year-old Wasiu Magaji, to eight months in prison for stealing a bag.

Magaji, who resides at Daki Biyu Jabi Village, Abuja, had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge bothering on house breaking and theft.

The judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, however, gave the convict an option of N13, 000 fine.

Maiwada warned the convict to be of good behaviour and desist from committing crimes after serving out his punishment.

He also ordered the convict to pay N35,000 as compensation to the complainant.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Ukagha Ijeoma, informed the court that one Abdulladi Sulaiman of Daki Biyu village, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station on July 15.

Ijeoma told the court that on July 12 at about 2:00pm while the complainant went to mosque to pray, the convict criminally broke into his room without his consent.

The prosecutor said the convict stole the complainant’s bag containing N35,000 cash, new clothes for his children worth N3,000 and some other old clothes.

Ijeoma said during police investigation and interrogation, the convict made a confessional statement, saying that the bag contained N28,000 cash.

She said that the bag was recovered from him.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 354 and 288 of the Penal Code.

She prayed the court to try him summarily under Section 347 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015. (NAN)
