The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a man during an attack at a mosque in Kano, while an angry mob later lynched the suspected assailant.
The police spokesperson in the state, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.
Mr Kiyawa said the incident occurred on Monday at the Yusuf Garko Mosque in the Maraba Quarters area of Kano, where a resident identified as Ladan Zubairu was attacked and killed by an unidentified assailant.
According to eyewitness accounts cited by the police, the suspect attempted to flee the scene but was pursued by residents, who eventually overpowered and lynched him.
The police said the mob also set the suspect’s residence on fire before security operatives intervened to restore order in the area.
Mr Kiyawa said security personnel were immediately deployed to the community to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
He added that investigators recovered the victim’s severed throat from the suspect’s pocket, describing the act as particularly brutal.
Both the victim and the suspect were taken to the Mohammed Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital in Kano, where they were confirmed dead. Their bodies have been deposited at the hospital mortuary pending autopsy.
The Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Bakori, has ordered a full investigation into the incident, including the circumstances surrounding the attack and the subsequent mob action.
Mr Bakori also appealed to residents to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their hands, urging them to cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
“Members of the public with useful information that could assist the investigation are encouraged to report to the nearest police station. All information will be treated with utmost confidentiality,” the police said.
