Midnight Downpour Submerges Graves In Bauchi Graveyard

An unspecified number of graves were washed away following a midnight Sunday downpour that lasted for hours in Misau Graveyard, Bauchi State.

When WikkiTimes visited the graveyard, volunteers were spotted sand-filling the sunk graves, but little would their efforts cover, as there was not enough sand to cover the graves.

The spokesman for the Misau Graveyard Maintenance Committee, Malam Ishaq Muhammed Katibu, told WikkiTimes over 100 graves were submerged, adding that some bodies could be spotted during the sand-filling process.

“As I talk to you now, people are there trying to cover the graves, but the damage is beyond control,” Katibu said. “Our Chairman has been notified of the situation and he is in the process of contacting the local government, being the custodian of the graveyard, for possible solutions.”

Katibu explained that the situation is becoming alarming since they started volunteering in the graveyard last year.

“Since last year, when we started volunteering in this place, we have been experiencing a similar scenario whenever it rains. Even vehicles can not enter the place because the entrance is not accessible,” he added.

He appealed to the government and concerned individuals to help with sand, saying that if provided, a passage will be provided for hitch-free conveyance of dead bodies and proper filling of the affected graves.
