The Bauchi State Police Command has ordered for exhumation of the body of a two-year-old girl killed and dumped in a mosque in Ningi local government of the State.
The police also announced that they have arrested three suspects including the parents of the deceased girl.
The Police spokesperson, SP Ahmed Wakil, disclosed this at a press briefing in Bauchi where the suspects were paraded.
WikkiTimes reports that a two-year-old girl had been killed and dumped in a mosque in Ningi town where police suspected that the victim was most likely raped before her death.
SP Wakil confirmed that the victim’s father, Abubakar Usman, 23; her mother, Lauratu Sale, 17, and a local health worker who operates a chemist, Aminu Adamu had been arrested in connection to the death of the child.
According to the Wakil, Police Commissioner, CP Auwal Musa Mohammed, has directed the homicide and forensic investigation team to exhume the body for further analysis to ascertain the cause of the death.
He said the suspects will be charges to court after the investigation is concluded.
WikkiTimes learnt that the parents, Lauratu and Abubakar had an affair that led to giving birth to the girl out of wedlock.
Lauratu explained that she had become pregnant with the baby through a relationship with Abubakar outside of marriage.
Lauratu stated that her daughter had recently been ill with cholera, and she had taken her to a nearby pharmacy for emergency treatment one night. “After returning home, the girl passed away,” she said.
She said her brother contacted Abubakar to come and collect his daughter’s body, but Usman allegedly refused.
Lauratu added that she handed her brother a wrapper, in which he wrapped the girl’s body before delivering it to her father.
Abubakar, the father of the girl, admitted to collecting the body at around 8 p.m. on Sunday 4th November 2024, and later dumping it in the mosque in Ningi.
He denied any claims that the girl had been sexually assaulted, asserting that he had not tampered with the wrapper when he left her body at the mosque.
Usman said he had hoped to avoid public exposure of his extramarital relationship with Lauratu and the resulting pregnancy.
The other suspect, Aminu Adamu, a certified Community Health Worker (CHEW) who attended to the child, stated that he had provided emergency treatment when the girl was brought to him with symptoms of illness suspected to be a cholera.
Adamu said he advised the family to take the girl to the hospital for a full diagnosis.
The Police assured the public that thorough investigations are underway, and justice will be pursued for the minor’s tragic death.
