Concerned Nigerians have raised N1,178,292 to support Kolawole Kuforiji, a Nigerian journalist battling Parkinson’s disease, to secure life-saving treatment at a foreign Hospital.
The fundraiser, initiated by concerned citizens, aims to finance Kuforiji’s Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery at Atasehir Medicana International Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey.
A statement signed by Segun Adeleye, President of World Stage Limited said the appeal fund to raise $35,000 (approximately N57 million) for Mr Kuforiji has so far received attention of small donors who have contributed a total of N1,178,292.
“The smallest donation recorded is N1,000, while the highest single contribution is N200,000” the statement said.
According to the statement, the organizers are still awaiting responses from corporate foundations and prominent figures such as Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Dangote Foundation, and others.
The fundraisers revealed that MTN Foundation and Shell Nigeria declined to support the cause. However, the BUA Group has requested a formal letter, which has already been sent. Other organizations yet to respond include the NNPC Foundation, Chevron Nigeria Foundation, Guinness Nigeria Foundation, Nigerian Breweries Foundation, Total E&P Nigeria Foundation, and Babcock University.
Kuforiji’s colleagues in the media have been actively amplifying the campaign through press releases and public appeals. They argue that as the media often serves as a platform for others in need, it is only fair that society steps in to support one of their own.
A recent video shared by a colleague showcased a Nigerian who successfully underwent DBS surgery in the same Turkish hospital, aiming to reassure skeptics about the procedure’s efficacy.
Kuforiji, a 54-year-old husband and father of two, spent two decades with Rhythm FM under the Silverbird Group, reporting on business and economic issues. His work highlighted financial inclusion and the strides of Nigeria’s energy and banking sectors.
However, his life took a drastic turn when he was diagnosed with drug-resistant Parkinson’s disease, leaving him with severe mobility challenges and tremors.
The statement added that i”nitially treated at Ikorodu General Hospital, Lagos, and later referred to LASUTH, Kuforiji’s condition has shown little improvement over two years. Medical experts have now recommended DBS surgery abroad as the best option for his recovery.”
The severity of Kuforiji’s condition has depleted his family’s finances. Despite this, he remains hopeful and determined to overcome his health challenges. Donations can be made to the dedicated account set up by his friends at Polaris Bank:
