Nasarawa Fire Service records 99 fire incidents from January to June

The Nasarawa State Fire Service says it recorded 99 fire incidents across the state between January and June 2020.

Alhaji Dalhatu Dogara the state’s Chief Fire Officer said this while speaking with newsmen in Lafia on Wednesday.

He said that a total number of 104 distress calls were received by the service during the period, out of which 99 had to do with fire outbreaks, while four were for rescue operations with one recorded as false call.

He said seven lives were lost during the period.

“The estimated value of property lost is N95 million, while the estimated value of property saved is N1.5 billion and most of the fire incidents occurred in residential houses,” he said.

According to him, most of the fire incidents occurred in Lafia Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

“Doma, Akwanga, Nasarawa, Wamba,  Nasarawa-Eggon, Keffi,  Awe and Keana LGAs also recorded fire incidents during the period under review,” he said.

Dogara linked the fire incidents to factors including carelessness, misuse of electrical equipment and misuse of cooking gas.

“I am using this opportunity to appeal to residents to always be fire conscious and avoid overloading of electrical sockets.

“Also, use of cooking gas should be maintained and fixed in appropriate position and they should avoid allowing children to tamper with gas cylinders,” he said.

He appreciated Gov. Abdullahi Sule for his efforts towards repositioning the service for better service delivery and appealed for more support in terms of fire stations in LGAs where fire stations were unavailable. (NAN)
