NEDC Begins Inter-Religious Dialogue In Bauchi

The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) yesterday in Bauchi flagged off a program on
promotion of peace, inter-religious dialogue and deradicalization for peaceful co-existence among the people residing in the north-east.

NEDC Managing Director, Mohammed Goni Alkali who launched the program said the initiative was to increase knowledge of citizens in respecting one another for peace and peaceful coexistence in the the community.

He noted that, the objectives of the programme are to increase awareness of religious extremism,ways to recognise signs of extremism and skills to adequately identify its ills in addition to engaging selected youth towards deradicalization to encourage radicalized individuals to dissengage and provide psychosocial support for better livelihood.

“The main purpose of engaging media in this peace programme is to reach out and sensitise the public particularly youths on the dangers of extremism and radicalization as well as influen,ces associated with the terms, prevent the most at risk individuals from being radicalized and appeal to their conscience.

In the same vein, the programmes will lay emphasis on moderation and peaceful coexistence in the society.”

On the 20,000 cartons of assorted drugs and medidical consumables donated by the commission to the Bauchi state government, Goni Alkali said the drugs and medical consumables supplied which were provided on a needs basis is to bridge the gap in the state’s cholera outbreak response to curb mortality and spread of the disease.

“The Commission is handing over drugs and medical consumables to support the State Government in responding to the Cholera Outbreak in the State. There is also need to focus more on long term prevention measures such as ensuring clean water and hygiene measures for comunities to prevent widespread future outbreaks.”

On his part, the state governor, Bala Mohammed represented by the Chief of Staff, Government House Bauchi, Aminu Gamawa applauded the North-East Development Commission for coming up with the peand ace and inter-religious dialogue initiative, assuring that the state government will support the program for its success in Bauchi.

Governor Bala also appreciated the commission for the donation of drugs and medical consumables which he said will go along way towards assisting the state to provide citizens with good healthcare services for a better living.
