Mr Ahmad Danyaro, Programme Officer of the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has vowed to curb hate speech.
Danyaro, who is also the head of CITAD, Abuja office, made this pledge in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.
He said that CITAD, with the support of MacArthur Foundation, had been monitoring the use of hate speech for years in the country.
“What we do is to monitor hate speech online, and on monthly basis, we organise press conferences on hate speech at our headquarters in Kano.
“And that conference is usually to highlight major hate speeches that were recorded within a particular month and they are categorised into different types.
“There are those that are religious, ethical and gender-based, and through this, we have made several publications, geared towards mitigating or reducing hate speeches,” he said.
Danyaro said that the centre was also taking into cognizance, critical stakeholders by partnering with media organisations and media regulatory bodies to reduce hate speech.
He said that at the end of 2018, the centre had a national summit where stakeholders discussed hate speech.
“We invited the National Security Adviser, other security agencies and scholars in the academia and civil societies to have a common definition of hate speech,” he said.
