Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), has resigned from his position on Saturday.
Abubakar, who was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari seven years ago, submitted his resignation after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
Following the meeting, Abubakar expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve the nation.
He described the meeting as routine, explaining that it was a standard briefing on national security matters. “This is a routine meeting. From time to time, we brief Mr. President on various situations, and today was no exception,” Abubakar said. “After the briefing, I tendered my resignation, and Mr. President graciously approved and accepted it.”
NIA is a Nigerian government division tasked with overseeing foreign intelligence and counterintelligence operations, created in 1986.
Abubakar expressed deep appreciation for the chance to serve Nigeria under the leadership of two presidents. “I am thankful for the opportunity to serve under Mr. President’s transformational leadership for an extended period of 15 months, which is quite rare. I promised to remain professionally dedicated to our country and noble causes,” he added.
Reasons for Quitting
When asked about the reasons behind his resignation, Abubakar cited personal and family matters but emphasized that there was nothing serious behind his decision.
“There are several reasons for my resignation, some of which are personal and related to family matters, but nothing of serious concern. My relationship with Mr. President and the administration remains strong, and I will continue to stay engaged with the issues and security situations of the country,” he stated.
He also highlighted the importance of mentoring younger officers, noting that after seven years in the role, it was time for others to step up. “Now we have many capable officers who can take on this job,” he remarked.
Daily Trust reports that Abubakar’s career in public service has been long and distinguished. In 2018, he was appointed NIA Director General by President Buhari and received an extension in December 2021.
