The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday announced the approval of some critical initiatives and works across the country, including five projects that if completed, can enhance development in Northern Nigeria.
The multi-billion projects would tackle the pressing issues, including disaster relief, infrastructure rehabilitation, and economic development.

Disaster Relief Fund
One of the major concerns discussed was the recent devastating flooding that affected nearly 50% of Maiduguri, Borno State.
In response, the council supported President Tinubu’s plan to establish a Disaster Relief Fund. This fund, aimed at mitigating the impact of future disasters, will be financed through contributions from the Federation account, as well as solicited donations from the private sector.
The move is expected to provide much-needed relief and ensure preparedness for future flooding anywhere across the federation.
Integrity Tests on Dams
Another decision affecting the North is the council’s resolve to set up a technical committee to conduct integrity tests on the Alau Dam, also in Borno State, and other dams across the country.
This comes as concerns over dam safety rise, particularly in regions vulnerable to extreme weather events like flooding. Ensuring the structural integrity of dams in the North will help prevent future disasters and safeguard the livelihoods of millions of residents who depend on these water resources for agriculture and drinking water.
Infrastructure Development
The FEC also approved the construction of a 258 km 3-lane carriageway in Kebbi and Sokoto States. This project is part of a larger 1,000 km superhighway linking Illela in Sokoto State to Badagry in Lagos State.
The newly approved section stretches from Silame in Sokoto to Buya Town in Kebbi. Once completed, the superhighway will enhance connectivity and stimulate economic activities in Northern Nigeria by facilitating the movement of goods and services across key trade routes.
Rehabilitation Projects
In addition, the council has reviewed and rescaled the contract for rehabilitating the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano dual carriageway. The revised contract, valued at N740.79 billion, includes provisions for solar lighting, to improve road safety and security, especially in the region.
The 14-month project, awarded to Julius Berger, is expected to enhance the transportation network, reduce travel time, and boost economic growth in the North.
Restoration of Gamboru Bridge
The meeting further approved N3.2 billion contract for repairing the Gamboru Bridge along the Gamboru-Ngala-Kala Balde Road in Borno State.
This vital infrastructure will be completed within 24 months, aimed at providing a lifeline for communities affected by insurgency and restoring vital trade routes between Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
