The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Kano State Command and the Centre for Information Technology and Development, CITAD, have agreed to work together to fight Sexual Gender-Based Violence, SGBV, and other forms of domestic violence across the state.
Mr Abu Abdu Tambuwal, the state NSCDC Commandant made this remark while receiving the delegation of CITAD at his office on an advocacy visit.
Mr Abu Abdu Tambuwal who was represented by his deputy said further that the NSCDC has intensified efforts by engaging critical stakeholders to bring an end to sexual and gender-based violence in the state.
On her part, the Gender Desk officer of the NSCDC, Aisha Yakasai, said that the door is open for providing data on gender-based violence and other sexual offences in Kano State.
A’isha Yaksai added that NSCDC both at the state and national level take gender-based violence and other related sex cases seriously.
Buhari Abba who was the communication officer of the team urged NSCDC and other stakeholders to have strong and formidable teams that would be committed to tackling gender-based violence especially the one affecting young women and girls.
According to him, young women and girls particularly in the rural areas are more vulnerable to gender-based violence due to ignorance and harmful cultures, saying all hands should be on deck to address the menace.
Speaking, the technical gender officer of the CITAD, Zainab Aminu who was represented by Fatima Baba – Kura, said the advocacy was initiated to seek the support of concerned authorities in the fight against gender-based violence which has become a stubborn scourge in society.
She added that violence against women and girls is evil confronting all communities in our state today. We admit that it happens in our homes, institutions, places of work and even in religious organizations.
Fatima Baba Kura also called on the government at all levels to partner with the relevant stakeholders in collectively fight with against gender-based violence.
Gender-based violence is still a taboo subject in Kano and Nigeria at Large and families are often reluctant to discuss it or seek help. However, in recent times, the media has reported an increased frequency of gender-based violence and child rape cases in various parts of the State.
