NUJ Congratulates Promoted Katsina Police Spokesman Who Harassed Female Journalist

The Katsina State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has congratulated spokesperson of the Katsina Police Command, Gambo Isa who was promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) after leading some officers to harass a female journalist, Ruqayya Aliyu Jibia.

Ruqayya had told WikkiTimes how the police accosted and brutalised her after she condemned them for illegally parading suspects before trial.

While NUJ kept quiet during the face-off, the platform Ruqayya works for denied knowing her. However, there was no evidence of disengagement from service.

But in a press statement signed by Tukur Hassan Dan Ali, Chairman, Katsina State NUJ, the union called for further collaboration with Gambo and claimed it has set up a committee to look into the matter between the police spokesman and the female journalist.

THE PRESS RELEASE

While referring to Gambo as a “long time friend”, NUJ congratulated the officer, calling on journalists in the state to continue working with him and the police.

The union also announced its plans to investigate the “misunderstanding” between the officer and Ruqayya.

It stated: Katsina State Council of the NUJ Congratulates its longtime friend and colleague CSP Gambo Isa for his elevation to the position of Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) office of the Assistant General of Police Katsina – Kaduna Area Command.

While wishing him the best in this new deserving position, journalists in the State will continue to work with him and all other relevant officers in police and other Security Agencies.

Meanwhile, worried about the misunderstanding that occurs between our two colleagues PPRO Gambo Isah and a Television Journalist Ruqayya Aliyu Jibia, the NUJ constituted a committee of 5 persons to study the happenings and come out with a lasting solution to the problem.

The committee include; Danjuma Muhammad of Correspondent’s Chapel, Hannatu Mohammed (NAWOJ Chairperson) Mohammed Awwal of Arise Television, Ibrahim Mamman of KTTV and Abdulkadir Saulawa of State Radio.

The terms of reference and time frame of the committee is contained in a letter addressed to all members of the committee.

However, in all circumstances, we urged the committee members to fear Allah and do everything possible within its time frame and reconcile all the parties involved in the misunderstandings.
