The Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran journalist and media icon, Dan Agbese, who passed away on Monday, November 17, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 81.
Agbese, a celebrated columnist, author, and one of the most respected figures in Nigerian journalism, was praised by the guild for his integrity, intellectual depth, and lifelong commitment to ethical reporting.
In a statement issued by its General Secretary, Sufuyan Ojeifo, and made available by Publicity Secretary Kemi Yesufu, GOCOP described Agbese as “a titan of Nigerian journalism” whose contributions helped define modern media practice in the country.
Agbese was a co-founder of the iconic Newswatch magazine, alongside the late Dele Giwa, Ray Ekpu, and Yakubu Mohammed. Throughout his distinguished career, he was known for his investigative rigour, analytical clarity, and bold commentary.
His widely read “no holds barred” column and numerous national newspaper contributions were regarded as essential reading for policymakers, academics, and citizens seeking insight into Nigeria’s political and social developments. His writing combined scholarly depth with a patriotic determination to hold leaders accountable.
Beyond journalism, Agbese was a prolific author and biographer. His notable works include The Letterman: Inside the ‘Secret’ Letters of Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida: The Military, Politics and Power in Nigeria. His recent co-authored book, The President Is Not Sick, further cemented his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most insightful chroniclers.
President of GOCOP, Danlami Nmodu, described Agbese as “a journalistic institution,” adding that his passing “leaves a void that feels impossible to fill.”
“Dan Agbese was a mentor to many of us and a firm believer in a free and responsible press. We have indeed lost a giant,” Nmodu said.
General Secretary Ojeifo also paid tribute to Agbese, noting: “He practised journalism with conscience, courage, and an unshakeable commitment to truth. His wisdom and presence will be deeply missed.”
GOCOP extended condolences to Agbese’s family, friends, colleagues, and admirers, praying for God to grant them the strength to bear the loss.
