Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has told civil servants in the state that they must pay statutory taxes such as Pay As You Earn (PAYE), while receiving the new Minimum Wage.
Fintiri in a video shared on his verified X handle, said payment of tax such as PAYE is a must for every civil servant, thus defending his administration’s deduction of workers’ salaries in the month of October.
He wondered why the civil servants don’t want to pay tax as they earn, saying they must be ready to pay whatever that is statutory in their salaries.
“As expected, PAYE is a normal thing, why do you want to collect, or you work, and you don’t want to pay taxes. It was PAYE that is usually collected, that was collected out of their salary”, he said.
According to him, for the first two months since his administration started paying N70,000 Minimum Wage, the Accountant General Office has not been removing PAYE from the minimum wage which is why some civil servants make noise about it after the deduction in Otober.
WikkiTimes learnt that some civil servants in the state have had a deduction of up to N40,0000, which the state said was for Income Tax deduction (PAYE), a 2.5% National Housing Fund contribution and Adamawa State Health Insurance Contributory Scheme.
