The Gombe State Police command has confirmed the killing of one Umar Musa, 25, a suspected thug, in self-defence.
The suspect reportedly injured a police officer in Kumbiya-kumbiya quarters in Gombe town during a patrol on Wednesday.
Spokesperson of the state command, ASP Buhari Abdullahi, in a statement, noted that a gang of thugs attacked a patrol team while on routine anti-violence patrol in a bid to control criminal activities.
According to Abdullahi, the thugs launched an unprovoked attack with dangerous weapons, injuring a Police officer to stupor in the process. In defense, a Police officer maimed the deceased, who was confirmed dead at a hospital.
“As the gang advanced in greater numbers, posing an imminent threat to the lives of the patrol team, one officer, acting in self-defense and in defense of colleagues, maimed one of the attackers — Umar Musa, aged 25. He was immediately rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH), Gombe, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor and deposited in the hospital morgue.
“During the confrontation, one Special Constabulary, Ahmed Muhammad, aged 28, attached to the patrol team, sustained serious injuries and lost consciousness at the scene. He was initially presumed dead but was later revived and rushed to Zainab Bulkachuwa Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment for suspected internal injuries.
“A preliminary investigation revealed that one Haruna Kaura, a notorious individual known for mobilizing criminal gangs and peddling illicit substances, specifically Pentazocine injection in the area, instigated the attack against the police. Two cutlasses were recovered at the scene of the attack.” the statement partly read.
The Police further announced efforts to arrest the drug peddler and other fleeing suspects connected to the heinous act.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Yahaya, condemned the act and called on citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
