An operative of the Benue State Police Command, John Agbo, has allegedly defiled a 14-year-old mentally ill girl (name withheld) in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of the state.
A human rights activist in Benue, Ukan Kurugh, confirmed the incident, adding that the accused repeatedly raped the minor. Following the heinous act, the accused was said to have used a razor blade to shave the victim’s pubic hair.
Kurugh, via his Facebook handle, noted that the police officer took the girl into custody on July 11, 2022 and kept her from 10 am to 3 pm.

“On the said day, Inspector John took the girl without the knowledge of anyone in her family and kept her locked up indoors from around 10am until about 3pm,” said Kurugh. “After repeatedly having carnal knowledge of her, he got a razor blade and shaved off the hair in her private parts. Till date no one knows why he did this.”
According to Kurugh, the police officer conspired with Divisional Police Officer of Uglegi Station and the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) in charge of the case to cover up the matter.

“Mr John who confessed to have committed the crime also made an attempt to pay monetary compensation to cover up the matter. This was done with the support of the DPO and the IPO,” he wrote.
Anene Sewuese Catherine, the police spokesman in Benue State was not available for comment at press time. Neither did she respond to calls nor a text sent to her.
