Rabiatu Addra, the Nasarawa State Chairman of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), said a police officer attached to the State Intelligence Bureau at the state police command has raped and impregnated his 15-year-old niece who lives with him.
During a press briefing on Wednesday in Lafia, the capital of the state, Addra explained that a whistleblower had reported to the group that the victim was repeatedly raped by her uncle, who is an Inspector in the Nigeria Police Force, noting that the suspect has been arrested.
She vowed to ensure that the officer is prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to other residents of the state. Addra further noted FIDA would also follow up on the case until justice is served. She, however, appealed to the police to ensure a thorough investigation into the matter.

Her words: “On receipt of the information by the whistleblower, FIDA in conjunction with the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response Team, facilitated and mobilised police officers to get the suspect arrested. Our team with the police took the victim to the hospital and paid for her treatment bill. Unfortunately she lost the six-month-old baby, but the victim had been discharged from the hospital and reunited with her family.”
Addra appealed to victims of abuse to always have the confidence to speak out so as to get the necessary support.
