Private Schools: Kano Govt Pegs N45,000 as External Exams Fees

The Kano State Government has pegged a maximum of forty-five thousand naira as examination fees for both the West African Examination Council(WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) examinations fees across all private secondary schools in the state.
The government said the measure is to checkmate exorbitant charges made by such educational institutions on students and their parents in the name of examination fees, which it said can not be condoned.

A statement from the state’s office of the Special Adviser on Private and Voluntary Institutions said it has become a norm for private schools to charge exorbitant sums of money in the name of miscellaneous as part of examination fees paid by students wanting to write either WAEC or NECO examinations, saying it has to be stopped as it does not augur well for educational development of the state.

The statement signed by Hamisu Muhammad, Director Planning, Research and Statistics, said it has come to the notice of the government that some private schools have mandated parents to pay up to two hundred and fifty thousand naira as fees for upcoming WAEC and NECO examinations which is far beyond the amount set by the two examination bodies.

“The Kano State Government through the office of Special Adviser on Kano State Private
and Voluntary Institutions have observed the insistence and exorbitant charges for
WAEC/NECO is being claimed by School owners in Kano which is per above the mandatory fee

“This attitude is detrimental to the development of Education in Kano and will not be
tolerated. Its on record that in certain schools they have made it compulsory on parents
to pay the sum of N250, 000.00 for WAEC and NECO including for miscellaneous.
Indeed this outrageous and is not going to be condone by the Government”.

“Consequently, the Board have decided to peg the amount of WAEC/NECO to #45, 000
only (but to include Examination fees and other miscellaneous), please” the statement read.
