Profiling ATBU Appointees (1): Prof Kunya, A Builder In Academics

The Senate of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi (ATBU) has approved the appointment of Professor Sani Usman Kunya as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academics of the university.

Professor Kunya, a professional builder, was elected to the seat in a keenly contested race, defeating Professor Nanmwa Voncir to clinch the seat.

He will serve for a renewable tenure of two years.

Who Is Professor Kunya?

Sani Usman Kunya, a Professor of Construction Management, is an alumnus of the University of Jos. He obtained all his degrees from the university.

Professor Kunya who has been in the employ of ATBU since 1995, served in various capacities. The University promoted him to the rank of a professor in 2013.

He served as Dean of Students Affairs between 2016 to 2021. Due to his friendly and open-mindedness, ATBU students nicknamed him Baba Dean.

Before his appointment with ATBU, Professor Kunya served with Plateau State Housing Corporation between 1991 to 1994 as a Construction Project Engineer.

While nurturing a professional mind, he became a professional member of seven building regulatory bodies. His latest professional membership which came in 2021 is a member evaluation committee telecommunications-based research proposal.

Professor Kunya published 34 academic articles in reputable peer-review journals, thus attracting a pool of citations to his credit. He also presented 20 conference papers and technical reports in addition to authoring five unpublished thesis.

He has supervised four PhD students and 18 MSc and PGD students within his 28 years of active academic service.

Professor Kunya is a native of Tilde-Fulani, a community in Toro local government area of the Bauchi state. He is happily married to Hajiya Hauwa and is blessed with three children. He adopted and cared for many underprivileged children.
