Red Cross proffers Solution in mitigating floods, cholera outbreak

As the rainy seasons set in, the Nigeria Red Cross Society Bauchi state chapter has urged the state government to proffer measures against likely floods control and cholera outbreaks in the state.

The Training officer Red Cross Bauchi Malam Auwal Bashar made the call at a rally organized to celebrate 2019 World Red Cross day in Bauchi.

He said the state government should be proactive in putting adequate measures towards mitigating the evolving natural disasters.

“Government Should put in place the construction of drainage , dams, reservoirs and channels to divert floodwater.

“Flood mitigation should also involves the management and control of flood water movement, such as redirecting flood runoff through the use of flood walls and flood gates, rather than trying to prevent floods altogether.

Bashir pointed out that, with the commencement of early rain, there is need for awareness campaign before any possible outbreak.

“The campaign should be on drinking and use of safe water, Washing hands often with soap and safe water, use of latrines or burying of feaces, and controlling open defecation on body of water and keeping food covered,” he said

He said Red Cross in Bauchi has managed disaster in internally displaced persons communities across the state, adding that they provide support that will alleviate their suffering.

The Training officer explained that the rally was organized to celebrate world red Cross day that was being marked globally every 8th of May.
