Rising Cases of Pneumonia In Jigawa Forces Save The Children To Make Case For A Treatment Centre

While Pneumonia continues to claim the lives of under-five children in Jigawa State, lack of access to medical facilities complicated the situation for most patients with the breathe-associated ailment.

A recent report indicated that Jigawa State Governor Badaru Abubakar failed to keep to his campaign promise for one health facility per ward in the state, a development that further compounded issues for under five Pneumonia patients in remote rural communities of the state.

The 27 local government areas of the state raised an alarm over the scourge of Pneumonia in their domains. Kiyawa, the headquarters of Kiyawa local government area of the state has the highest incidences of Pneumonia related deaths and fatalities. In the first quarter of 2021, there was a 12.5 percent of infant deaths associated with Pneumonia in the area.

WikkiTimes gathered that the burden of Pneumonia in Jigawa State is higher than the average national burden with a projected 35 Pneumonia deaths in every 1000 live births.

Dr Adamu Isah, Chief of Party of Save The Children, said a befitting Pneumonia Strategic Control Centre can go a long way in saving the lives of children under five in Jigawa state.

“We want to convince the government to increase funding with a view to reducing the death of under-five children by the rampant cases of the childhood Pneumonia.”

He said Save the Children installed oxygen cylinders in eight general hospitals and six other healthcare centres across the state.
