The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Kaduna, and Nasarawa States recorded the highest number of road accidents in northern Nigeria in the first three months of 2024.
At least 1471 Nigerians have lost their lives across the country in the accidents in the first quarter of 2024.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in a report published recently, identified Niger, Bauchi and Jigawa as states trailing with high road accidents in the North.
According to the report, FCT has the highest number of accidents cases of 273, with 64 deaths while 554 people sustained injuries as a result of speed violation and other factors.
The NBS data disclosed that Kaduna state has recorded 180 cases of road accidents which claimed 171 lives and injured 828 people. The report identified speed violation and route violation as the major causes of the accidents.
Kaduna was followed by Nasarawa state with 169 confirmed road crashes that consumed 41 lives and injured 438, while Niger state followed suit with 127 cases, 119 deaths and 433 injured persons, all as a result of speed violation in most cases.
WikkiTimes analysis of the data showed that Bauchi and Jigawa states are also among the states with major cases of road accidents with Bauchi having 99 cases, 45 deaths, 442 injured persons while Jigawa has 95 cases, 41 deaths while 308 people were injured.
Decrease in Accidents
Giving the breakdown of the accident data in the country, the NBS said that there was a decrease in road crashes in the first quarter of 2024 as 2,662 cases were recorded compared to 2,733 cases recorded in the first quarter of 2023.
“The total number of road traffic crashes in Q1 2024 was 2,662, indicating a decrease of 2.02% from the previous quarter which recorded 2,717 and a 3.00% fall from 2,733 in Q1 2023”.
“Of all crashes, serious cases stood top in Q1 2024 with 1,715 compared to fatal and minor cases with 693 and 254 respectively. In addition, the three categories of cases recorded a decline in the quarter under review relative to the preceding quarter”, it said.
The report showed that speed violation, tyre burst, and wrongful overtaking are the major causes of the accidents recorded in the period under review that killed at least 1,169 males and 302 females.
