At least 16 students were killed on Friday morning when a two-storey building at Saint Academy in Jos, the capital of Plateau state, collapsed.
The building, located in the Busa-Buji area of Jos North local government, came down during lessons, causing numerous injuries and trapping both students and teachers inside.
The Hausa version of the BBC reports that the sight of lifeless bodies added to the distress, as desperate parents rushed to the school premises to know the condition of their children.
Other sources said the section of the school that collapsed is where the classes SS1, SS2 and SS3 students who were writing exams.
The Nigerian National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been working tirelessly to rescue those still trapped under the rubble.
With over 1,000 students enrolled at the school, the total number of fatalities remains uncertain as the rescue operation continues.
The cause of the building’s collapse is yet to be determined. Some of those who have been rushed to the hospitals are in urgent need of blood transfusions as the hospitals battle to treat them.
