School projects: Nasarawa Assembly urges contractors to complete jobs, or – –

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Education has advised all contractors handling ongoing construction and renovation of primary schools across the state to complete their jobs within three weeks or risk sanctions.

Mr Daniel Ogazi, the Chairman of the committee, gave the advice on Wednesday during a meeting with the management of the state Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the project consultant and some contractors in Lafia.

Ogazi (APC-Kokona East) and Deputy Majority Leader of thd housr said that the assembly would not accept any excuse from contractors who failed to complete their work within the next three weeks.

He said that the meeting was called due to the defects observed  when the committee embarked on an inspection visit to various school projects across the state.

“When we went on an oversight function, we observed a lot of defects in project works such as non-completion of projects by some contractors and the use of sub-standard materials.

“We also observed disparity in contract sum of the same projects, among others, and we don’t know why, hence the need for this meeting.

“This meeting was called to hear from the project consultant, affected contractors as well as the management of SUBEB.

“With the aim of making sure that good works are delivered by contractors in order to justify government huge investment in the education sector,” he said.

Ogazi also urged the management of the SUBEB to intensify efforts in supervising school projects to ensure that quality jobs are done by the contractors.

The committee chairman however assured of their readiness to collaborate with the government and other relevant stakeholders for improved standard of education in the state.

Alhaji Mohammed Dan’Azumi, the Chairman, SUBEB, also pledge the board’s readiness to continue to be up and doing in ensuring that contractors delivered their jobs according to specifications.

He commended the committee for their efforts in ensuring that the standard of education is improved in the state and called for its sustenance.

The SUBEB chairman therefore assured thr committee that the board would fully implement all the observations and recommendations.Also speaking, Mr Kassim Tukur, a consultant with Canonic Associates handling the school projects, said that proper assessment of the school projects was done before the bill of quantities were issued.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the contractors who spoke during the meeting  promised to make corrections in the defects observed in their projects and to live up to expectations. (NAN)
