The Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Alhaji Aminu Achida, on Sunday bagged the “Youth for Resolution and Peace Building Initiative Champion of Peace award” for the year 2021.
The award which was presented to the Speaker at a town hall meeting in Sokoto was in recognition of his dedication to peace in the state House of Assembly.
Alhaji Sani Umar-Jabbi, the Grand patron of the group organising the meeting, said that the choice of the Speaker for the year 2021 award is base on his demonstration of peaceful leadership among the lawmakers.
“As you can see, despite being a member of the opposition party in the state, we are experiencing the best legislation so far.
“Today under his leadership, we have experienced good bills by the Assembly that will continue to impact positively on the development of our state.
“Moreover, as one of the Youth leader in the country, he has continued to demonstrate the qualities of leadership that generally indicate the agitation for Youth leaders will yield a fruitful choice,” he said.
Umar-Jabbi, the District Head of Gagi in Sokoto South local government, added that the activity is in commemoration of the 2021 International Peace Day, which is celebrated every year on Sept. 21.
In his presentation, Prof. Bello Bada of Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto, called for more involvement of youth towards addressing the challenges facing the country.
Bada faulted politicians and the citizens on the security challenges in Nigeria, saying “as a nation we give more attention to our political activities than security.
“We left the reality and concentrated on our selfish needs, thinking of who will be the next president, governor and local government Chairman.
“For this, we need to return to the drawing board and give more priority to Youth empowerment and respect our security by ensuring all their needs a fully covered for better society,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Kamaldeen Okunlola, represented by CSP Abdul-Azeez Madawaki, commended the Youth for celebrating the day.
He appealed to them to continue to support the police and other security agencies in their collective effort towards ensuring a peaceful atmosphere for the people.
In his response, the Speaker thanked the Youth organisation for the recognition accorded to him and pledged to continue to ensure peace in the Assembly and Sokoto State in general. (NAN)
