TCN Commissions 60MVA Transformer in Biu Amid Persistent Grid Collapses

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a new 1x60MVA transformer at the 132/33kV Biu Transmission Substation under the Gombe Sub-Region.

The project, completed on December 8, 2024, aimed to address power supply challenges in parts of the Northeastern Region.

The power distribution firm, in a statement on X, said the new transformer increases the substation’s capacity from 36MW to 84MW, enabling the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) to draw more bulk power.

This development is expected to enhance electricity delivery to Biu of Borno State and surrounding areas, providing relief to communities often plagued by erratic power supply.

The project is funded through the TCN-World Bank initiative, which focuses on strengthening power infrastructure nationwide.

Nigeria’s national grid has faced repeated collapses further complicating electricity reliability with the recent one being the 12th in 2024.

These collapses negatively impacted households, businesses, and industries, particularly in regions like the North East.
