Teachers Day: NGO Wants Recruitment Of More Teachers For Physically Challenged Children

The Rural Women and Youths Development (RUWOYD), an NGO in Sokoto state, has called for the recruitment of more teachers for physically challenged children in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that YOWOYD is partnering with ActionAid Nigeria on improving education and Tax programmes in Sokoto state.

Mr Alibayo Joseph, ROWOYD’s Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officer, made the call during the World Teachers Day, celebration on Tuesday in Sokoto.

Joseph said ROWOYD also called for the domestication of special salary for teachers, recruitment of more female teachers, investment in continuous online Learning programmes, provision of quality water supply to schools, accommodation and special transport allowances for teachers posted in rural communities.

He described this year’s theme ” Teachers at the Heart of Education Recovery” as a relevant recognition of impacts of COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

Earlier, the National President of  Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Dr Nasir Idris, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for sustaining teachers and schools excellent awards aimed at motivating stakeholders for improved performance.

Idris who was represented by Sokoto State NUT Chairman, Alhaji Umar Moyi, said reports indicated that no fewer than 1.5 billion students, including 63 million primary and secondary students, were affected by COVID-19 worldwide.

He explained that in Nigeria teachers were mandated to adopt remote or distance learning methods which increased the burdens on the teaching profession. ”

This means teachers need to be adequately equipped, empowered and supported to ensure effectiveness in carrying out the task of education recovery,” Idris said.

He commanded President Buhari for granting 65 years as retirement age of Teachers, inclusion of ILO and UNESCO international recommendations on educational policies.

The National President urged the government to increase security mechanism to protect schools and enhance shortage of teachers for effective learning and teachings in schools.

The Sokoto State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Alhaji Bello Abubakar, commanded the organizers and described the theme as apt and relevant as well as enjoined teachers to remain dedicated to educational growth in the nation.

Abubakar, represented by Chairman Teachers Service Board, Alhaji Bello Yabo, reiterated the state government’s commitment to improving infrastructures in education and enhancing teachers welfare as well as recruitment of more qualifies teachers in the state.

NAN reports that State Coordinators of National Teachers Institute (NTI) and Teachers Registration Council (TRC), Mr Ibrahim Musa, and Solomon Ndashaba, have respectively called for teachers to ensure upgrade and register as the regulation requires. (NAN)
