Thousands of women in Jos, the Plateau capital have staged aprotest against the government for not fulfilling its promise of distributing
palliatives to cushion the effect of the lockdown.The protesting women are alleging that despite been at thevenue of the distribution exercise since yesterday, nothing has come their wayand no government official appeared at the venue with relief materials fordistribution.
Reports say the protesting women blocked Zaria road alongFederal Government College, in the early hours of Saturday.
One of the protesters who pledges anonymity said, “afterwaiting for hours yesterday, we were told to come back today and on gettingthere this morning, we did not see any government official that will distributeany palliative to us.
“We won’t leave the road until the state governmentbring the palliatives and distribute to us”, She insisted.
Speaking to WikkiTimes, Dan Manjang, commissioner ofInformation, said he’s not aware about the development and will find out fromthe committee on palliatives and get back.
He has yet to call as of press time.
Recall that Plateau state government in a statewidebroadcast said, government will give out palliatives to cushion the hardshipbeing faced by people as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Government is aware of the hardship being faced by ourcitizens particularly the vulnerable and weak. “The palliative committee headedby the Deputy Governor Prof. Sonni Tyoden will commence distribution to thosewho are truly in need by Saturday 25th April 2020”, the statement hadread.
