Underage Marriages Flourish in Adamawa IDP Camps

At least five underage marriages otherwise known as child marriages were recorded in one of the Internally Displaced Persons IDP camps in Adamawa State, this year alone.

Despite the hard times being faced by the vulnerable persons squatting at the various camps in the state following the 14 years of Boko Haram insurgency which forced many families to flee their homes, indiscriminate contraction of marriages by underage couples and tales of found love still flourish, according to the Punch.

In one of the camps at the Fufore Bakura, 17 years old who is originally from Michika, got married to 15 years old Aisha, in January 2023.

Bakura said, He so much loved Aisha that made him approached her parent and they permitted him to marry her.

Bakura said, “We are in the camp together and I love her so much, he can go to any extent to give her what she wants for her to be happy.

 He added “Aisha is pregnant for me and will soon give birth… I don’t want her to go to school, but I want my children to go to school. I want to have three children.”

The SS2 Secondary student, Bakura also said his dream is to become a soldier after he is done with his secondary school.

When contacted, Aisha, who is originally from Bama of Borno state, confirmed that her parents gave her in marriage to Bakura.

Aisha said, she loves Bakura so much and would like to have three children for him, adding that she would like to go to school alongside her children.

The young bride revealed that she knows what to do and what not to do to keep herself and her baby out of danger.
